COLLABORATION

I use elements from ethnography, filmmaking, and theater to engage with people, generate dialogues, and collectively create visual work. In the past decade, I have worked with grassroots groups using participatory art as a tool for advocacy and political education about immigration and labor rights. My academic and creative work is nurtured by collaborations with scholars, artists, and people involved in communities that I work with and am part of. Since 2016, I have been a member of Meerkat Media Collective, a group of independent artists that uses consensus-based processes and shares resources and skills to produce individual and collaborative projects. Utilizo elementos de la etnografía, el cine y el teatro para relacionarme con las personas, generar diálogos y crear obras visuales colectivamente. En la última década he trabajado con grupos de base utilizando el arte participativo como herramienta para el cabildeo y la educación política sobre derechos migratorios y laborales. Mi trabajo académico y creativo también se nutre de colaboraciones con investigadores, artistas y personas involucradas en las comunidades con las que trabajo y de las que formo parte. “Under Construction” is a multimodal project that examines labor conditions immigrant women from Latin America face in low-wage industries in New York City. Using techniques from theater, filmmaking, and ethnography, this project brings together day laborers from the building trades, nail salons, and the domestic service industry to discuss the conditions that create precarious jobs and the strategies these women use to advocate for their rights. This ongoing project is part of my long-term collaboration with members of the New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) and has been developed with the support of the Society for Visual Anthropology and the Robert Lemelson Fellowship. The project is in development.

“Under Construction” es un proyecto multimodal que examina las condiciones laborales que enfrentan las mujeres inmigrantes de América Latina en industrias de bajos salarios en la ciudad de Nueva York. Utilizando técnicas del teatro, el cine y la etnografía, este proyecto reúne a jornaleros de la construcción, salones de uñas y la industria del servicio doméstico para discutir las condiciones que crean empleos precarios y las estrategias que estas mujeres utilizan para defender sus derechos. Este proyecto en curso es parte de mi colaboración a largo plazo con miembros de New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) y ha sido desarrollado con el apoyo de la Sociedad de Antropología Visual y la Beca Robert Lemelson. El proyecto está en desarrollo.

In the last ten years, nearly 500 construction workers have died on their job sites in New York State alone. Hundreds of NYC immigrant construction workers took to the streets on Workers’ Memorial Day (April 29th) to commemorate their fallen co-workers and draw attention to unsafe working conditions for immigrant laborers.

Ni uno más (2019, 5:45 min) was made by Meerkat Media Collective with support from the Brooklyn Arts Council. It is also part of my long-term collaboration with members of the New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE), a workers’ center that organizes immigrant day laborers in low-wage industries in NYC. As programs director at NICE, I brought together staff, members, and artists from The Illuminator to develop the projection on the Brooklyn Bridge. I produced, directed, and edited the film. Recently, my work with members has resulted in the production of the film Astrid and Under Construction (see above), an ongoing participatory project. This film is part of Newsreels from the Resistance, a series made by the Meerkat Media Collective that captures New York City's social movements during the Trump presidency. Since 2016, I have been a member of this group of independent artists using consensus-based processes and sharing resources and skills to produce individual and collaborative projects. Our newsreels have screened in film festivals, online platforms, and community centers in and outside NYC.

Como directora de programas en NICE, reuní al personal, miembros y artistas de The Illuminator para desarrollar la proyección en el puente de Brooklyn. Recientemente, mi trabajo con las y los miembros resultó en la producción de la película Astrid and En construcción (título provisional), un proyecto de investigación y arte participativo en curso.
