When the Mexican government bans turtle fishing, a slaughterhouse on the Oaxacan coast is forced to close, and people from the region must find other ways to make a living. New ideas about nature and conservation blend with a gradually widening market for tourism, altering the relationships between communities, public institutions, private investments, and the natural resources at their disposal. Focusing on the construction of memory, “The Lure” is an essay film that traces the ethnographic documentation of this historical process, examining how access and control over resources continue to shape the region’s development.

Cuando el gobierno mexicano prohíbe la pesca de tortugas, un rastro en la costa oaxaqueña se ve obligado a cerrar y la gente de la región debe encontrar otras formas de ganarse la vida. Nuevas ideas sobre la naturaleza y la conservación se combinan con un mercado turístico que se amplía gradualmente, alterando las relaciones entre las comunidades, las instituciones públicas, las inversiones privadas y los recursos naturales a su disposición. Con un enfoque en la construcción de la memoria, "El señuelo" rastrea la documentación etnográfica de este proceso histórico, examinando cómo el acceso y el control de los recursos continúa dando forma al desarrollo de la región.
